Review: Slide (Slide #1) By: Jill Hathaway

Title: Slide (Slide #1)
Author: Jill Hathaway
Source: Arc received from publisher
Published: March 27th, 2012
My Rating 3.5 out of 5 stars
Goodreads Summary:

Vee Bell is certain of one irrefutable truth--her sister's friend Sophie didn't kill herself. She was murdered.

Vee knows this because she was there. Everyone believes Vee is narcoleptic, but she doesn't actually fall asleep during these episodes: When she passes out, she slides into somebody else's mind and experiences the world through that person's eyes. She's slid into her sister as she cheated on a math test, into a teacher sneaking a drink before class. She learned the worst about a supposed "friend" when she slid into her during a school dance. But nothing could have prepared Vee for what happens one October night when she slides into the mind of someone holding a bloody knife, standing over Sophie's slashed body.

Vee desperately wishes she could share her secret, but who would believe her? It sounds so crazy that she can't bring herself to tell her best friend, Rollins, let alone the police. Even if she could confide in Rollins, he has been acting distant lately, especially now that she's been spending more time with Zane.

Enmeshed in a terrifying web of secrets, lies, and danger and with no one to turn to, Vee must find a way to unmask the killer before he or she strikes again.

My Thoughts:

I have had this book on my shelf for two years, which is way, way too long. I knew that this book was a quick read and it definitely seems to be very mysterious and interesting. While I didn’t love it, I thought the plot and the premise of the book was fresh and new for me and that was what kept me reading, the mixture of paranormal and mystery was gripping and interesting to say the least.

Vee has narcolepsy, or at least that what everyone thinks is wrong with her. She will randomly faint at moments and it is impossible for her to wake up. But, really she is sliding into another person, she literally walks in their shoes and can see the world through their eyes. But, the only way for her to slide into another person is to have or to have touched something that the person has left an emotional imprint on. So for Vee, she seems like she has OCD only wanting things that are brand new or not touched before by anyone. One night Vee slides into someone who she can’t quite figure out, who they are or what is going on. That person is holding a knife and has just killed her sister’s best friend Sophie. But, everyone else believes that Sophie has killed herself. Only Vee can find out who is responsible and stop it all before more people start to die.

Vee has this huge secret that she can’t share with anyone, her mother died years ago and her father is a pediatric surgeon who works constantly and is rarely ever home. The one time she tried to tell her father the truth about what she could do he sent her to a therapist who told her that she was only saying these things to get attention after her mother’s death. She has her best friend Rollins and her sister Maddie to lean on but, even the two of them don’t really know the truth. Vee doesn’t know what she is going to do with the information she has, she doesn’t have any way to share what she knows without seeming crazy or like she is guilty of murdering Sophie herself. Vee wasn’t a main character that you felt sorry for despite everything that she was dealing with but, I never could quite connect with her completely. The fast paced plot kept me engaged with her but, as you learned more about her everything was moving so fast that there wasn’t as much time to really get to know her or connect with her on a deeper level.

Overall, Slide was a quick an exciting paranormal mystery, it honestly wasn’t one of those books that I will remember a few months from now but, while I was reading it I was definitely entertained. It’s a great in between book, it was something that I could cleanse my reading pallet with and get me ready for another book and let me slowly let of the world of the last. I also had an arc of the sequel and so I just finished that one also and if you enjoy a good quick mystery then definitely check this one out, I didn’t love it but, it definitely did its job.
